The End of the Marvel Universe as we know it in SECRET WARS! (Midtown Comics Press Footage)
Last week MARVEL teased that they would make an “Announcement to End all Announcements” and they weren’t kidding. After today, everything changes for the House of Ideas and nothing will ever be the same. (Well, unless they get changed again). At a live filmed announcement at Midtown Comics in Manhattan on Tuesday afternoon (see video in player below), Marvel Editor-In-Chief Axel Alonso and Senior Vice President/Executive Editor Tom Brevoort announced that its Comic Book Universe, established since 1961, will come to an end with the upcoming eight-issue release of SECRET WARS arriving this May. This move brings a new status quo for the Marvel Universe with worlds colliding to form a mash-up of continuities that will be the setting for all Marvel Comics from May 2015 onwards.
SECRET WARS, an eight-issue series by Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic, marks the culmination of the incursion story that Hickman began at the outset of Marvel NOW with Avengers #1 and New Avengers #1 back in late 2012, and will bring together multiple continuities and alternative universes in a single “Battleworld.” Time will tell if these changes are far-reaching enough to affect the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which starts Phase Three with next year’s Captain America: Civil War. Here’s what Marvel’s Senior Vice President of Publishing and Executive Editor Tom Brevoort had to say!
“Once we hit Secret Wars No. 1, there is no Marvel Universe, Ultimate Universe, or any other. It’s all Battleworld.”
Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso added this.
“The Marvel Universe will be Battleworld, and every single piece of those worlds will be building blocks for the universe.” For the rest of the story click on the player below for footage from the Midtown Comics press conference and let us know what you think about the reshaping of the Marvel Universe!
